Effluent Filters

Overview

Effluent filters serve a crucial role in septic systems. They are used to separate large particles from the outflowing effluent. That prevents those particles from clogging drain fields, pumps, and sprinklers. It can be very tedious to periodically clean the effluent pump and sprinkler heads. Catching those particles before they have the change to build up on those components makes septic maintenance much easier.

How to Choose the Right Effluent Filter

When it’s time to choose the right effluent filter for your septic system, you’ll need to know:

  • The number of gallons moving into the septic tank on a daily basis
  • The required slot size – Please note that the slot size of the effluent filters on the average residential septic tank system is 1/16.

At Wholesale Septic Supply, we sell the very best in NSF Standard 46 rated effluent filters (and other septic system components). Our experts can help you determine the best effluent filter for your residential and/or business septic system needs.

How to Maintain Effluent Filters

Regularly cleaning a septic system’s effluent filters is critical to the proper functioning of the system – and to preventing clogs, backups and system failures. In general, it’s recommended that effluent filters are:

  • Inspected on a monthly basis
  • Cleaned every few months to few years, depending on the waste water flow entering the system.

Experts recommend cleaning effluent filters whenever the septic tank is being pumped (because there won’t be any risk of waste being released from empty septic tank when the effluent filter is removed). The filter will, however, have to be cleaned between septic tank pumps. In these cases, it’s important to:

  • Check the system’s waste levels before removing the effluent filter – This can reveal if the system may be clogged and/or if it’s best to pump the system before cleaning the filter.
  • Stop running water in the home or building – This will prevent additional waste water from being delivered to the system while the filter is being cleaned and/or other maintenance work is being performed.

When to Replace an Effluent Filter

Whenever an effluent filter begins to appear worn, damaged and/or cracked – or whenever it is failing to catch waste, it’s time to replace it. The effluent filters at Wholesale Septic Supply start as low as $35 – and they can go a long way to preventing system failures that can cost upwards of $20,000.
