How to Maintain Effluent Filters

Regularly cleaning a septic system’s effluent filters is critical to the proper functioning of the system – and to preventing clogs, backups and system failures. In general, it’s recommended that effluent filters are:

• Inspected on a monthly basis
• Cleaned every few months to few years, depending on the waste water flow entering the system.

Experts recommend cleaning effluent filters whenever the septic tank is being pumped (because there won’t be any risk of waste being released from empty septic tank when the effluent filter is removed). The filter will, however, have to be cleaned between septic tank pumps. In these cases, it’s important to:

• Check the system’s waste levels before removing the effluent filter – This can reveal if the system may be clogged and/or if it’s best to pump the system before cleaning the filter.
• Stop running water in the home or building – This will prevent additional waste water from being delivered to the system while the filter is being cleaned and/or other maintenance work is being performed. 

When to Replace an Effluent Filter

Whenever an effluent filter begins to appear worn, damaged and/or cracked – or whenever it is failing to catch waste, it’s time to replace it.
