Aerobic Treatment Units (ATUs) typically have a couple devices that require electricity. Often times ATUs use their control panel for three main purposes.

    • The first purpose of a common ATU control panel is to provide power to an air pump. Air needs to be constantly injected into most ATUs, so the air pump needs constant electricity.
    • The second purpose of a common ATU control panel is to power and control an effluent pump. Systems that use a spray field to discharge their effluent will need a pump to push the water out of the sprinklers. However, running the pump when there is no water in the tank will damage the pump. A float switch is often used with the control panel to ensure the pump only activates when there is water in the system.
    • The third purpose a common ATU control panel is to alert the homeowner when a problem is detected. If the pump fails, the water within the tank will begin to overfill the system. A high-water alarm is used to alert the homeowner when the water level in the tank is dangerously high. Additionally, air needs to be injected into the system continuously. ATU control panels often have another alarm that triggers when the aerator malfunctions.

The E4L comes equipped with a clock timer to control the water pump. Clock timers allow the homeowner to specify what time of day they would like their pump to activate. Additionally, the pump is can be kept deactivated when the homeowner expects to be in their yard. If the tank fills up too much outside of the timer’s settings, an override float switch will activate the pump to prevent the system from flooding. The override float switch will activate the pump without regard for the timers setting.
